ABOUT US
Cynthia Dewell began dancing at age five. After her family moved to Arkansas, she pursued serious ballet training at Little Rock Ballet Academy. Following high school, she discovered modern dance—igniting a lifelong passion—and continued her studies at the University of North Texas and Southern Methodist University. At 19, she moved to New York City, where she performed professionally from 1982 to 2002 with choreographers including Zvi Gotheiner, Judith Jamison, Hannah Kahn, Ralph Lemon, Susan Marshall, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Judith Garay/Anthony Morgan, Jody Oberfelder, and Neta Pulvermacher. Her performances also include: Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall, Spoleto Festival (1986), and on Broadway at the Shubert Theatre in Nothing Like a Dame (1998, 1999), a benefit for the Actor’s Fund of America, alongside her children. Cynthia has taught and choreographed since 1981. In NYC, her work was commissioned and recognized with grants and awards, including support from the Harness Foundation for Dance. She performed and choreographed for Dancers Responding to AIDS, including The Remember Project at Dance Space. Trapped was inspired by Warren Doody’s documentary on domestic violence. A collaborative artist, Cynthia works across disciplines with dancers, actors, musicians, and visual artists. Her body of work includes nearly 100 dances for stage and film. In 2009, she founded Isolated Incident Performance Group, creating a platform for original, interdisciplinary performance. Through IIPG, she has produced four full-length works integrating choreography, poetry, script, and performance.
The Isolated Incident Performance Group, was founded in 2009 by Cynthia Dewell. IIPG engages dance, theatre, music, visual and multi-media artists who convey the diversity of the human condition, influencing culture and society by their transcendence of the perceived limitations of the present. Each performance promises to be a unique experience – an “Isolated Incident.”
